Andreï Makine of Russia, was born in Siberia and now lives in France. He writes in French. Dreams of My Russian Summers was his first novel. One Upon the River Love, his second novel, appeared in 1998.

MILJENKO JERGOVIC – Two Stories

Miljenko Jergovic of Bosnia and Hercegovinia, born in Sarajevo and is the author of four collections of poetry: Warsaw Observatory (1988); Anyone Studying Japanese in This Town Tonight? (1990); Himmel Commando (1992) and Across the Icy Bridge (1996) and two collections of stories: Sarajevo Marlboro (1994) and Karivni (1194). He has won several prizes, including the 1987 Mak Di dar Prize for poetry. His Sarajevo Marlboro has been translated into English, French and Italian.

AARON WOODLEY – The Wager

Aaron Woodley of Canada is a filmmaker at the beginning of his career. Two of his storyboards, The Ratcatcher and Pipe Dreams have appeared in earlier Exiles. He received the Toronto Arts Foundation Protogé Award, and has written, directed and co-produced the films Medussa Among the Moochers, Pipe Dreams and The Wager — The Wager is the only Canadian film to be officially pre-selected for the Cannes festival, 1998.

SUSAN SWAN – For Sappho’s Women

Susan Swan of Canada, a novelist, professor, and journalist, has published five books, including Stupid Boys are Good to Relax With (stories), The Wives of Bath (novel), The Last of the Golden Girls (novel) and The Biggest Modern Woman of the World (novel).

KENNETH J. HARVEY – A Coward

Kenneth J. Harvey of Canada is a novelist, poet, and essayist. His novels include Brud and Nine-tenths Unseen; his story collections are Directions for an Opened Body, The Hole That Must Be Filled, and The Great Misogynist; and his collection of poetry is Kill the Poets.

MICHEL VON DREGER – Mouth

Michel von Dreger of Canada is a young poet and this is her first published poem.

LISA ST. AUBIN DE TERÁN – The Hacienda

Lisa St. Aubin de Terán of England and Italy is the author of two memoirs of her years in Italy, numerous novels, a poetry collection, and a collection of short stories. Her first novel Keepers of the House, won the Somerset Maugham Award, and her novel, The Slow Train to Milan, won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize.
