$15,000 and $2,500 for Canadian Fiction and Poetry!

Two wonderful opportunities for Canadian writers!

The  $15,000 Carter V. Cooper/Exile Short Fiction Competition (sponsored by Ms. Gloria Vanderbilt) opened for Year Five on October 1, 2014. Closing deadline (postmarked) is March 30, 2015.

As with each year thus far, we had a very successful year four with many many great stories having been submitted! Not only did we again offer $10,000 for the best short story by an emerging writer (winner, Jason Timermanis), and $5,000 for the best short story by a writer at any career point (winner, Hugh Graham), but four of our previous year’s winners have realized full book publication: Silvia Moreno-Garcia (co-winner, emerging, year one) in September 2013 released her first collection This Strange Way of Dying; Christine Miscione (year two, emerging winner) released in Sept 2013 her first collection Auxiliary Skins; Leon Rooke, year two co-winner of the senior category released the collection Wide World in Celebration and Sorrow: Acts of Kamikaze Fiction; Austin Clarke, year three co-winner of the senior category released the collection They Never Told Me and Other Stories. And in 2014, we released two collections of stories by shortlisted writers Matthew R. Loney (That Savage Water) and George McWhirter (The Gift of Women). Also to note is that in 2013 Silvia Moreno-Garcia edited the anthology Dead North: Canadian Zombie Fiction, and 2014’s Fractured: Tales of the Canadian Post-Apocalypse – both now in their second printing! And, of course, 46 writers appear in the CVC (Carter V. Cooper) Short Fiction Anthology series, Books One, Two, Three and Four (published with Exile Editions).

The awards evenings are held at the prestigious Turf Lounge in Toronto, with 90 people out for the reserved-seat dinner extravaganza, all there to appreciate and celebrate our winning writers, and the publishing houses. The next awards event will be held June 20, 2015: an evening you will not want to miss – part of a whole weekend of events, a great celebration of Canadian writing! Year Five opened for submissions in October of 2014… be a part of this unique Canadian experience!
